What a bad gutter does to a house
A gutter that overflows for one winter will stain the render. A gutter that overflows for three will soak the wall behind it, rot the fascia it is screwed to and bring damp into the room inside. Almost every rotten fascia we replace started as a gutter nobody looked at.
- Green or black staining running down the wall under the gutter line
- A waterfall over the edge in heavy rain instead of flow to the downpipe
- Damp on an inside wall, usually in the corner of an upstairs room
- Plants growing out of the gutter — the silt is deep enough to hold roots
Repair or replace?
Most gutters can be saved. Brackets, joints, seals and alignment are all fixable and far cheaper than a new run. We only quote for replacement when the gutter is brittle, cracked along its length or the wrong size for the roof it is catching — and if the fascia behind it is rotten, we deal with both at once so the new gutter has something solid to hang on.
